Thai King's Health 'Not Stable' After Kidney Treament
Palace officials release a statement on the health of Thailand's king. At 88, King Bhumibol Adulyadej is the world's longest reigning monarch. But amid health concerns and rare public appearances, the Royal Household Bureau has been issuing updates on his condition. The palace statement, released on Oct. 9, said the king was being prepared for a procedure to treat kidney failure. The statement released afterward said doctors are "watching his symptoms and giving treatments carefully," but his health is "not stable." Accord to Reuters, this was unusual by the palace. Statements on the king's health are usually issued after his condition shows improvement. The BBC reports this is the first time doctors have asked him to stop performing some of his formal duties, which would be transferred to his heir, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn. Public discussion of these topics is not permitted due to Thailand's strict lèse-majesté laws.
